How a Balloon and Breakfast Morning Works
Fly first, eat after.
Choose the breakfast option
The headline price is usually flight only, with no breakfast. Pick an option that names the breakfast, and check whether it includes transport.
Coffee before you fly
Most operators serve coffee and a snack at check-in while the balloons inflate. Breakfast comes after landing.
Toast, certificate, then the cave
After the toast you are driven to breakfast. At La Gruta, We Fly warns that the wait outside the restaurant is beyond its control.
Ruins or straight back
Some options add time at the pyramids after breakfast; We Fly's express option heads back to Mexico City early.

Choosing
La Gruta, Another Cave or a Buffet
If the point is breakfast at La Gruta, the cave restaurant behind the Pyramid of the Sun, book We Fly’s balloon flight with breakfast at La Gruta. On dates we checked in late October 2026 the flight plus La Gruta was about $203 per person if you drive to We Fly’s reception, and about $274 with transport and an express return to Mexico City. We Fly warns that the wait outside the restaurant is beyond its control. If any natural cave will do, other operators charge less. We Fly is rated 4.9 from 4,822 reviews. Our review →
Three kinds of balloon breakfast
Packages split three ways. La Gruta is a restaurant inside a natural volcanic cave, about 200 m from Gate 5 behind the Pyramid of the Sun, and it has served diners since the early 20th century. Several operators run breakfasts in their own natural caves, which they describe as decorated with pre-Hispanic art or as an “ancestral cave”. The third kind is a buffet or set breakfast at a restaurant or at the balloon port itself.
“Cave breakfast” on a listing does not mean La Gruta. Of the listings we track, only a few name it: We Fly, Paseos Olmedo, and Arc Tours, which offers its buffet “optional in the Restaurant La Cueva”. Paseos Olmedo’s $350 package stops at La Gruta but does not include the food.
Breakfast is not always in the price
The headline price on most listings is the flight alone. Viaja Teotihuacan’s $148 option, for example, says it does not include breakfast, and We Fly’s own website treats breakfast as optional on its shared flight and included in its other packages. Before you pay, look for an option name that mentions the cave, the buffet or breakfast, and check whether transport is part of it. Coffee and a snack at check-in are common, but that is not breakfast.
Waiting times at La Gruta
We Fly is unusually frank. Its express option says breakfast at La Gruta is “subject to availability” and that “the waiting time outside the restaurant is beyond our control”. The drive-yourself option warns there “may be a timeout to access the site”, and the all-included option repeats the waiting-time warning. The all-included option’s text calls the venue La Cueva, so ask We Fly which cave you will eat in if La Gruta matters to you.
A 2021 Chilango listing gave La Gruta’s breakfast hours as 8:00 to 11:00, and reports that the cave is cool inside, around 6 °C. Bring the layer you flew in. One We Fly reviewer in March 2026 wrote that the cave breakfast in their package was not provided, so keep your booking confirmation to hand.
What is actually on the plate
Most listings just say “breakfast”. The ones that publish a menu:
- Visita Teotihuacan’s all-inclusive package, about $231 with transport: seasonal water, fruit, coffee, artisan bread, and chilaquiles with chicken, steak or egg, or an omelet, with vegan options. Our review →
- Explora México’s cave option, about $219 with transport: chilaquiles, enchiladas or quesadillas, with orange juice, coffee, sweet bread and fruit. Its $203 option swaps the cave for a Mexican brunch at Huehueteotl restaurant.
- Globo Tetris’s all-inclusive option, about $208, serves a buffet at La Higuera, which the listing places right in front of the pyramids, and includes the zone entry.
- Volare serves a Mexican breakfast at its own balloon port after landing, listed as included even with its $159 drive-yourself option. Our review →
Breakfast without the transfer
If you are driving or staying near the pyramids, three operators sell flight plus cave breakfast without transport. Skyteam was about $181 against $137 for its flight alone. Tlatoani was about $201 against $157. We Fly’s La Gruta option was $203 against $143. Breakfast adds roughly $44 to $60 per person. Skyteam review → Tlatoani review →

Cave breakfast with transport: prices
With round-trip transport from Mexico City, the cave packages cluster between about $211 and $240. Skyteam’s all-inclusive was about $211, Cielo Azteca about $217, Teotihuacan Adventures about $228, Teotihuacán Feliz about $231, Viaja Teotihuacan about $236 and Tlatoani about $240. Magic Balloons sells a single cave-and-transport option at about $181, with 120 reviews against thousands for the larger operators. None of these includes the MX$210 zone entry unless the option says so. The full spread is on our prices page.
Which breakfast suits you
Book We Fly if La Gruta itself is the draw and you can live with a possible wait. Book Skyteam or Tlatoani for a cave breakfast at a lower price, with or without transfer. Pick Visita Teotihuacan or Explora México if you want to know the menu in advance, and Volare if you would rather eat at the balloon port and keep the morning short. Whatever you book, dawn in the valley is cold, with average lows of about 2 to 4 °C from December to March, so read what to wear. Our best Teotihuacán balloon rides page compares every flight.

What Travelers Say About the Breakfast
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on Viator and GetYourGuide, checked in October 2026, and shift slightly day to day.
"What an amazing experience for our family! Watching the sunrise over the mountains from the balloon, so peaceful and beautiful. Would definitely recommend WeFly. This was a highlight of our trip."
"Excellent experience and communication. Everyone had a great time. Transport was smooth, balloon ride was incredible. Breakfast was great!"
"Best Viator tour ever out of the 25 or so I've done in my life. Great crew, prompt pick up. Probably the best value (fun/dollar) I've ever had, too. Trust me--youll be glad you did this."
"It was an amazing experience and the working crew was great. Beautiful day with a great view. We lived it all and recommend it."
"Very experienced pilot & tour guide. Staffs are quite friendly and considerable. Highly recommend this trip."
"We drove to the We Fly office as we only had time for the hot air balloon ride. Check in was seamless and didn’t require our passports, however accessing a locker to store our bags required a drivers licence. There’s a gift shop with hoodies"

No. La Gruta is one restaurant in a natural cave about 200 m from Gate 5 behind the Pyramid of the Sun. Many operators serve breakfast in their own natural caves, and others serve a buffet at a restaurant or at the balloon port. We Fly's listing names La Gruta; most cave listings do not.
No operator gives a time. We Fly's own listing says breakfast at La Gruta is subject to availability and that the waiting time outside the restaurant is beyond its control. Build some slack into your morning.
Most listings just say breakfast. Visita Teotihuacan lists fruit, artisan bread, coffee and chilaquiles with chicken, steak or egg, or an omelet, with vegan options. Explora México offers chilaquiles, enchiladas or quesadillas with orange juice, coffee, sweet bread and fruit.
About $44 to $60 per person on dates we checked in late October 2026: Skyteam was $137 for the flight and $181 with a cave breakfast, Tlatoani $157 and $201, and We Fly $143 and $203 with La Gruta. See every package on our prices page.
