How a Pickup Morning Works
From the day-before message to the drive home.
Pick the transport option
The headline price is usually the drive-yourself option. Choose the option with round-trip transport, and enter your hotel or full address when you book.
Confirm the time the day before
Operators send the exact pickup time and place the day before. Reply to confirm, and check it is the same hotel or meeting point you gave.
Be outside before dawn
Pickups typically run between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. The drive north to the valley takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes with little traffic.
Choose your return
Some options head back straight after breakfast. Others wait while you walk the ruins and get you back in the early afternoon.

Planning
Pickups, Meeting Points and Return Times
If you are staying in Mexico City and want someone else to do the 4 a.m. drive, book Volare’s flight with round-trip transport. On dates we checked in late October 2026 the transport option was about $186 per person, against $159 if you drive yourself, and it includes breakfast at the balloon port. A second option at the same $186 waits while you walk the ruins before driving you back. It is rated 4.8 from 4,438 reviews. The catch: Volare collects from selected hotels, so check yours is covered before you pay. Our review →
Balloons do not fly from the city
Every flight launches in the Teotihuacán valley, around San Martín de las Pirámides, roughly 45 to 50 km northeast of central Mexico City by road. You will not see the city from the basket. The headline price on almost every listing is the flight alone, with you driving to the balloon port; the transfer is a separate, pricier option. That gap is the whole subject of this page. For the full price picture, see Teotihuacán balloon ride prices, and if you plan to drive or are staying near the pyramids, flight-only tickets are cheaper.
Who picks up where
Transfers come in three shapes: a pickup at your hotel, a shuttle from a central meeting point, or a private car.
- Volare’s listing includes pickup “in selected hotels” on its two transport options. Give your hotel when you book and wait for the operator to confirm it.
- We Fly sells two different transfers. Its express transport option, about $203, picks up “exclusively” in the central area and names Juárez, Condesa, Roma and Polanco, with a buffet breakfast and an early return. We Fly’s own website describes free pickup within 4 km of the Ángel de la Independencia and does not list Polanco, so confirm before booking from there. The La Gruta breakfast listing meets transport guests by a We Fly-branded vehicle next to the Sheraton María Isabel. Our review →
- Amigo Tours, sold as the GetYourGuide balloon flight with optional pyramids tour, meets you at the Citibanamex branch by the Ángel. The itinerary puts the coach ride at 57 minutes.
- Excellentravel’s private-transport option, about $357 per person, sends a driver and guide to your lobby in a private vehicle. Our review →
- Viaja Teotihuacan’s full package, about $236, includes round-trip transport from your hotel with a cave breakfast. Our review →
How early you will leave
Pickups typically run between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m., and the exact time arrives in a message the day before. Explora México’s listing, for example, collects between 4:30 and 4:50 for a 5:30 arrival. With empty roads the drive is about 45 to 60 minutes, and Roma, Condesa and Polanco sit a little further from the northbound exit than Centro. One operator’s terms allow only 10 minutes’ grace before the van leaves, so be in the lobby early. One reviewer missed a pickup that had been moved to 3:45 a.m. by phone, which is why it pays to answer that day-before message and keep your phone on.
The public bus will not get you there in time. The ticket window at Terminal Norte opens at 6:00, and the buses stop at the archaeological zone’s gates, not at the launch fields.
Staying in an Airbnb
A private apartment changes things. Some operators collect only from hotels: Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán’s terms say its transport does not pick up from private homes or Airbnbs. Others are explicit that they will. The Luxury Tours private tour with a shared balloon starts at “your hotel or house within Mexico City”, and the private packages pick up “from your accommodation”. If your listing says “selected hotels”, message the operator with your street address before you book.
The simplest fix is a tour with a fixed meeting point. Amigo Tours and the other Ángel de la Independencia departures work wherever you sleep, as long as you can get to Reforma before dawn. Plan that short trip the night before.
When you get back, with and without the ruins
The return depends on the option. Volare puts its transport option at about six hours from hotel pickup to hotel drop-off, so a mid-morning return is realistic. One operator’s own terms give 10:00 a.m. for an immediate return and about 2:30 p.m. if you add a ruins visit. With the pyramids added, Excellentravel returns you at about 1:00 p.m. and Explora México between 1:00 and 2:00. A Volare reviewer who chose the ruins option was given a 12:30 p.m. departure back to the city.
Ruins options do not usually cover the entry ticket. Volare’s listing says the MX$210 fee is paid in cash at the gate, and the zone opens at 8:00. For packages with a guide, see the balloon and pyramids tour page, and for a private car, private balloon rides.
Which transfer suits you
Volare suits most hotel guests: one fixed price for the drive and breakfast, plus the choice to stay for the ruins. We Fly’s express option suits travelers who want to be back by mid-morning. A private driver suits families, Airbnb guests and anyone who would rather not wait for other pickups. All of them still depend on the weather: read weather cancellations before you book, and how to get to the balloon port if you might drive.

What Travelers Say About the Pickup
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on Viator and GetYourGuide, checked in October 2026, and shift slightly day to day.
"Amazing experience with Volare. Everything was smooth and well organised from start to finish. Our pilot, Juan Manuel Diaz, was incredibly skilled and had such a great, positive attitude that made the whole flight even better. He got us impressively close to the pyramids, which made the views feel surreal. Definitely a highlight of our trip."
"The balloon tour was great with some amazing views, then they give you 1-2 hours to explore the pyramids by foot if you want this option. Though I have to say being given a time of 12:30pm for going back into the city is quite annoying as at t"
"Such a fantastic unique experience. I normally don't like heights, but this was well worth it! Going up on the balloon was very gentle and easy. The crew is knowledgable and you feel very safe the whole time."
"So amazing. It was worth waking up early. I took my kids 11 and 16. I thought it might be scary, but it wasn’t at all. It goes up slow and you just float. Even the landing was great. Riding on an airplane is way scarier! I have scratched that off my bucket list, I’m happy about it!"
"Early start, but worth it. Great deal considering, food, balloon, and transport, and the Mariachi band."
"Everything was great from beginning to end. Everyone was helpful and kind. The tour was just as described."
"An absolute highlight of my trip to Mexico! Flying over the Teotihuacan archaeological site at sunrise was nothing short of magical. From start to finish, the entire operation was flawless. The early morning pickup from Mexico City was perfect"

Pickup and Transport FAQ
Short answers on pickup times, neighborhoods, Airbnbs and getting back to Mexico City.
Typically between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m., and the operator confirms the exact time the day before. Explora México's listing, for example, collects between 4:30 and 4:50 for a 5:30 arrival in the valley. Reply to the confirmation message so a changed time does not catch you out.
Roughly 45 to 60 minutes before dawn, when the roads are empty, for a trip of about 45 to 50 km northeast. Operators quote anything from 45 minutes to an hour, and a hotel pickup loop adds time. Our getting to the balloon port guide covers driving yourself.
It depends on the operator. We Fly's express option on Viator names Juárez, Condesa, Roma and Polanco; We Fly's own website describes free pickup within 4 km of the Ángel de la Independencia and does not list Polanco. Volare picks up at selected hotels. Amigo Tours meets everyone at the Ángel, and the private packages collect from your accommodation.
Sometimes. Luxury Tours starts at your hotel or house within Mexico City, and the private packages collect from your accommodation. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán says its transport does not pick up from private homes or Airbnbs. If a listing says selected hotels, message the operator with your address before booking, or choose a tour that meets at the Ángel.
No. The Autobuses Teotihuacan ticket window at Terminal Norte opens at 6:00, after balloon check-in, and the buses stop at the archaeological zone's gates, not at the launch fields.
With a straight return, mid-morning: one operator gives 10:00 a.m., and Volare puts its transport option at about six hours from pickup to drop-off. If you add the ruins, expect early afternoon, about 1:00 p.m. with Excellentravel and 1:00 to 2:00 with Explora México. See what to do after the flight.
For most visitors without a car, yes. On Volare it was $27 more than the drive-yourself option on dates we checked in late October 2026: $186 against $159. Compare every package on our prices page.
