Choosing
Guide, Ticket or Free Time
For a balloon flight and a properly guided visit in one booking, take the top option of the Amigo Tours balloon flight with optional pyramids tour on GetYourGuide. It adds a professional guide, the Teotihuacán entry ticket and the Basilica of Guadalupe on the way back. The listing starts at $148 for its cheapest option; the same product on Viator, the Teotihuacan and Guadalupe Shrine full-day tour, priced the guided option at $249 on dates we checked in late October 2026. It is rated 4.6 from 1,285 reviews on GetYourGuide. If you only want time to wander, cheaper packages give you that. Our review →
Free time is not a guided tour
Most balloon packages that mention the pyramids give you time on foot, not a guide. Volare’s option with extra time at the ruins costs the same $186 as its plain transport option, and the listing says plainly that the entrance fee and a guide are not included. Viaja Teotihuacan’s $236 package lists the archaeological-zone ticket and a certified guide among the exclusions. Tlatoani’s all-inclusive option, about $240, gives up to two hours. Skyteam’s listing notes that a guide can be hired on site.
That suits you if you have read up or want to set your own pace. If you want the story of the city told as you walk, book a package that names a guide.
Packages that include a guide
- The Amigo Tours guided option gives about three hours at Teotihuacán with the guide, an obsidian workshop with a tequila tasting, then a guided hour at the Basilica. Lunch is at your own cost.
- Excellentravel includes the entrance and a guided visit of about 2 hours 30 minutes with a Spanish-English guide the listing says is certified by SECTUR. With private transport and a private guide it was about $357 per person; the same day with shared transport and tour was about $247. Our review →
- Luxury Tours sells a private guided visit with zone tickets and a shared balloon at about $360 per person. Our review →
- We Fly’s all-included option, about $231, lists a certified guide in the archaeological area with 1 to 1.5 hours on foot. Our review →
Is the entry ticket included?
Usually not. Foreign visitors paid MX$210 in 2026, and Mexican nationals and foreign residents MX$105. Under-13s and over-60s enter free, by INAH’s rules. Free Sundays apply only to Mexicans and foreign residents with ID.
The packages above with a guide all include the ticket. We Fly’s separate all-inclusive option, about $258, includes the access ticket and three hours of free time but no guide inside the zone. Globo Tetris and Aventuras Teotihuacan also sell all-inclusive options with entry. Everywhere else, carry pesos for the gate: Volare’s listing says the fee is paid in cash.
What you can and cannot climb
You cannot climb the Pyramid of the Sun. INAH’s March 2026 bulletin still prohibits it, and it has been closed since 2020. The Pyramid of the Moon reopened its first tier in May 2025, but INAH closed access again after the April 2026 shooting “until further notice”, and we know of no reopening since, so check before you go. Some listings still promise a climb; plan to see both pyramids from the Avenue of the Dead. Whether the balloon passes over them depends on the wind, as our guide on flying over the pyramids explains.
The Guadalupe combo
Of the packages on this page, the Amigo Tours guided option alone adds the Basilica of Guadalupe, which sits in the north of Mexico City near the road back from Teotihuacán. The coach drops everyone at the starting point, the Ángel de la Independencia, but you can stay at the Basilica and make your own way back. On Viator the twin listing offers a balloon-only option with a 15-minute flight at $157 against $172 for about 45 minutes, so check which flight you are booking.
How the day runs, and what to bring
Balloons lift off around first light, and the archaeological zone opens at 8:00, so a ruins visit slots in after landing and breakfast. Last entry is at 4:30 p.m. Expect to be back in Mexico City in the early afternoon: Excellentravel returns you at about 1:00 p.m., and one operator’s terms give about 2:30 p.m. when the ruins are added. The Guadalupe stop makes the Amigo Tours day longer still.
INAH recommends water, a hat and sunscreen for the site. Drones are not allowed in the zone, and bag checks at the entrances were reported after the April 2026 shooting, so carry a small bag only. Amigo Tours’ listing also bars backpacks and large bags, and asks you to bring a passport or ID card. The walk along the Avenue of the Dead is long, a couple of kilometers end to end, so wear the closed shoes you flew in.
Who each package suits
Amigo Tours suits first-time visitors who want the whole day planned. Excellentravel and Luxury Tours suit couples or families who want their own guide and car. Volare’s ruins option suits independent walkers on a budget. For a quieter day, see private balloon rides; for the transfer details, rides from Mexico City; and for plans after landing, what to do after the flight.

Balloon and Pyramids FAQ
Short answers on guides, entry tickets, climbing and timing.
Usually not. Foreign visitors paid MX$210 in 2026 and Mexican nationals and foreign residents MX$105; under-13s and over-60s enter free. Packages with a named guide, such as Amigo Tours' guided option, Excellentravel and Luxury Tours, include the ticket, as does We Fly's all-inclusive option. Volare's listing says the fee is paid in cash at the gate.
Only some. Most packages give you one to two hours of free time on foot. Amigo Tours' top option, Excellentravel, Luxury Tours and We Fly's all-included option name a guide; Excellentravel's listing says its guide is certified by SECTUR.
Not the Pyramid of the Sun: INAH prohibits climbing it, and it has been closed since 2020. The Pyramid of the Moon's first tier reopened in May 2025 but was closed again after the April 2026 shooting until further notice. Check the current status before you go.
At 8:00 a.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. and closing at 5:00 p.m. That fits neatly after a sunrise flight and breakfast. More ideas in what to do after the flight.
Amigo Tours' top option adds a guided hour at the Basilica of Guadalupe after about three hours at Teotihuacán and an obsidian workshop. The coach drops everyone back at the Ángel de la Independencia, but you can stay at the Basilica and return on your own. Its Viator twin priced this option at $249 on dates we checked in late October 2026.
It depends on the wind. Operators steer for the archaeological zone when they can, but none can promise the route. See do balloons fly over the pyramids.
