Mexico City Balloon Rides is an independent guide to hot-air balloon flights over the Teotihuacán valley for visitors staying in Mexico City. We do not run flights, sell tickets or represent any balloon operator. Our job is to help you pick the right package, understand what it really costs and know what to check before you pay.
Who we are
The site is written and edited by the Mexico City Balloon Rides editors. We read the listings, the operators’ own terms, official sources and passenger reviews, and we update pages when prices, rules or inclusions change. We do not claim to have flown with every operator on this site, and we do not write as if we had: where a page describes the morning, it is built from the operators’ published itineraries and from what passengers report in their reviews.
How we choose and compare flights
Most Teotihuacán balloon listings sell the same sunrise flight in several options, from the flight alone to packages with hotel transport, a cave breakfast and a visit to the archaeological zone. We compare them option by option, because the headline “from” price is usually the cheapest option and rarely the one a Mexico City visitor ends up booking.
For each flight we review, we look at:
- The price of each option, as set on the operator’s booking schedule.
- What is included and excluded: transport, breakfast, time at the pyramids, a guide, and the archaeological-zone admission, which most packages leave out.
- Pickup areas and times, and whether the transport reaches private homes or only hotels.
- Flight length as the listing states it, and the length of the whole morning.
- Restrictions: minimum age, weight surcharges and health rules, in the operator’s own words.
- Cancellation terms on the platform and, where published, the operator’s weather policy.
- Rating and number of reviews, plus what low-star reviews complain about.
We then group flights by the kind of traveler they suit: first-timers without a car, self-drivers, history-first visitors, breakfast seekers and couples who want a private basket.
Where our numbers come from
Prices are read from the operators’ schedules on Viator and GetYourGuide, option by option, and each page says when we checked them. Viator schedules for Teotihuacán are priced in Mexican pesos, so dollar figures move with the exchange rate as well as with the date and season. We round to whole dollars and always say which option a price belongs to.
Ratings and review counts are the platforms’ own figures on the date we checked, rounded to one decimal place. We do not edit, select or write reviews to change a flight’s score.
Practical facts come from primary sources wherever we can find them, and we note the date we checked:
- INAH, Mexico’s national institute of anthropology and history, for the archaeological zone’s hours, admission and visitor rules.
- AFAC, the federal civil aviation agency, and press reports that quote it, for permits, inspections and incident investigations.
- The national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA) for historical rainfall and temperature averages near the launch fields.
- The operators’ own websites and terms for pickup times, flight length, weather cancellations and restrictions, which we attribute to the operator by name.
When sources disagree, we say so or give the range. When we cannot confirm something, we leave it out.
What we will not do
- We do not accept payment from operators for placement, rankings or reviews. Our picks are not for sale.
- We do not call any operator “safe”. We tell you what can be checked, such as an operator’s AFAC permit, the pilot’s license and passenger insurance, and what the authorities have reported.
- We do not promise that a balloon will fly over the pyramids. The wind sets the route, and operators say so themselves.
- We do not claim live availability. The booking platform shows the real price and the open dates for the morning you choose.
How the site is funded
When you book through our links to Viator, GetYourGuide or a hotel booking site, we may earn a commission. It does not change the price you pay, and it does not decide which flight we recommend. The affiliate disclosure explains how this works.
