Expect a hotel pickup between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m., check-in and coffee at the balloon port around 5:30 to 6:00, lift-off near sunrise and 30 to 60 minutes in the air. After landing come a sparkling-wine toast and a flight certificate, then breakfast, often in a cave restaurant, and on the full packages an hour or two at the ruins. With a flight-only transfer you can be back in Mexico City around 10:00; with the ruins, between about 1:00 and 2:30 p.m.
The day before, and the 4:30 a.m. pickup
The morning starts the afternoon before. Most operators send the exact pickup time, or the balloon-port location if you are driving, in a message the day before. Visita Teotihuacan, for example, sends its location and details one day prior, and Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán has a sales adviser confirm the time. Check that message, set two alarms and lay out warm layers and closed shoes; see our guide on what to wear.
Pickup times vary by operator and pickup point, but they cluster early. The reseller Civitatis lists pickups from 4:30 a.m. at Bellas Artes to 5:00 a.m. at the Ángel de la Independencia. Explora México collects between 4:30 and 4:50 a.m. to reach Teotihuacán around 5:30. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán’s shared transport leaves the Ángel at about 5:15 to 5:40. Arc Tours meets at the base of the Ángel and asks you to be there ten minutes early. Punctuality is not optional: Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán allows ten minutes’ tolerance, after which the transport leaves without you and without a refund.
The drive to the valley, about 45 to 50 km northeast by road on the Mexico-Pachuca motorway and the Ecatepec-Pirámides toll road, takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes in the empty pre-dawn streets. Pickup loops around several hotels add time; We Fly says guests coming from Mexico City leave around 3:30 a.m. for a 5:30 check-in. If you are staying in Teotihuacán itself, the trip to the field is about 15 minutes. Our guide on getting to the balloon port covers driving yourself.
5:30 to 6:30 a.m.: check-in, coffee and inflation
You arrive in the dark. We Fly’s reception opens at 5:30 a.m., the Fly Teotihuacan listing schedules arrival and check-in for 5:40, and Civitatis asks flight-only guests to be at the launch site by 6:00.
Check-in is paperwork first. Bring your passport or another photo ID: We Fly registers each guest under the flight insurance and will not board anyone without ID. Operators record each passenger’s name, weight and health conditions, which Amigo Tours’ listing says is required by order of the Mexican government, and passengers above the weight threshold, usually around 95 to 100 kg, pay any surcharge here. Big bags and backpacks do not go into the basket; Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán has lockers, and Amigo Tours lists bags, backpacks and selfie sticks as not allowed.
Then comes the part many people remember as much as the flight. Coffee and cookies are standard, and Globo Tetris lists a welcome bonfire. Out on the field the crews inflate the balloons one by one, and you can watch the whole process. Skyteam and Excellentravel both describe it as part of the experience, and it is the best moment for photos of the balloons on the ground. A short safety briefing follows before you board, as several listings mention. Listen to it, and do what the crew tells you in the basket.
It is cold at this hour. Average dawn lows at San Martín de las Pirámides are about 2 to 4 °C from December to March and 8 to 9 °C in the summer months.
Around sunrise: the flight
Balloons lift off at first light, so the time follows the season. Sunrise at Teotihuacán, computed for local time, is about 7:05 in late December, 6:38 in late March, 5:57 in late June and 6:33 in late October.
Most listings quote 30 to 60 minutes in the air, and 45 to 60 minutes is the commonly quoted figure; Visita Teotihuacan’s listing says 30 to 50 minutes, subject to weather. You share the basket with other passengers, and the pilot may move people to balance the load. Fly Teotihuacan advertises music on board, and Globo Tetris says the toast can come during or after the flight.
Where you go is up to the wind. The pilot controls the ascent and descent, not the direction, so on some mornings the balloon passes near the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Avenue of the Dead, and on others it drifts well to one side or toward Acolman. Our guide to whether balloons fly over the pyramids explains why. Keep everything inside the basket; Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán bans selfie sticks, and a phone strap is a good idea.
Landing, toast and certificate
The balloon comes down in whatever field the wind allows, and the ground crew meets it there. Follow the pilot’s instructions for the landing. Then a vehicle takes you back toward the base or on to breakfast.
Every operator we cover marks the landing the same way: a sparkling-wine toast and a personalized flight certificate. Some show you footage too. Explora México shows drone and professional camera footage after landing, and Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán shows photographs, which you can buy. Photo and video packages are extra on most listings.
If you booked flight only, this is where your package ends, about two to three hours after check-in. Visita Teotihuacan’s flight-only option lasts about 2 hours; Volare’s runs about 3.
About 8:00 to 9:30 a.m.: breakfast and the workshop
Breakfast depends on the option you chose. Many packages go to a restaurant in a natural cave near the archaeological zone. Visita Teotihuacan’s all-inclusive package lists seasonal water, fruit, coffee, artisan bread and chilaquiles (with chicken, steak or egg) or an omelet, with vegan options. Volare serves a Mexican breakfast at its own balloon port, and Globo Tetris’s all-inclusive option uses La Higuera restaurant. The cave at La Gruta is cool inside, so keep a layer on; our cave breakfast page compares the options.
Many full packages then stop at a cooperative or workshop for a short talk on obsidian and maguey and a tasting of local drinks such as tequila, mezcal and pulque. Expect a chance to buy crafts.
The ruins, and the ride back
The archaeological zone opens at 8:00, so the ruins fit after breakfast. Full packages give you free time on foot, usually about 1 to 1.5 hours (Visita Teotihuacan allows 1.5 hours, Explora México 1 hour), and the entry ticket is extra on most of them: MX$210 for foreign visitors in 2026, paid at the entrance. Climbing the Pyramid of the Sun is prohibited, and access to the Pyramid of the Moon was closed after the April 2026 shooting with no reopening announced as of late April, so do not plan on climbing either, whatever an older listing says. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, as INAH recommends.
Then the ride back. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán’s immediate-return transport reaches Mexico City around 10:00 a.m.; with a Teotihuacán tour it leaves at 13:30 and arrives about 14:30. Explora México estimates arrival between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m., and Excellentravel returns you at about 1:00 p.m. Our guide on what to do after the flight has ideas for the afternoon.
