If wind, fog or rain grounds your Teotihuacán balloon flight, the usual outcome is a free new date, not a refund. We Fly Teotihuacan and Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán both reschedule at no cost, while a Civitatis-sold tour refunds the price minus a MX$420 ground-transport fee. Your cleanest exit is the booking platform’s own rule: on Viator listings marked free cancellation you get a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start time, so for a 5:00 a.m. pickup that means by 5:00 a.m. the day before.
How a weather cancellation is decided
Balloons need light, steady wind. Experts quoted by El Universal say flights run only in winds generally under 10 to 15 km/h without abrupt changes, and Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán lists its own triggers for cancelling as winds over 20 km/h, dense fog or prolonged rain. The thresholds differ, but the principle is the same everywhere: light winds only.
The decision is made on the morning, at the field. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán states that the pilot decides whether take-off happens. Since 2026 there is a second voice: the permanent AFAC commission announced for the valley in February 2026 includes deciding whether the weather allows flights among its tasks, and Milenio reported it operating from 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. That is why some cancellations come after you have already arrived and had your coffee. Forecasts the night before help, but the call can only be made when the crew sees the conditions at dawn.
Cancellations can hit the whole valley at once. On 1 February 2026 operators cancelled every balloon flight because of strong, gusty winds from cold front number 32. Winter is the dry season, but cold fronts mean it is not free of cancellations.
A flight can also be cut short. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán says flight times are approximate and depend on the wind, and that an early landing for safety is not grounds for a refund. Most listings quote 30 to 60 minutes in the air, subject to weather. If the balloon comes down early, accept the pilot’s decision; it is part of the deal on every flight.
What the operators’ policies say
There is no single rule. Each balloon company sets its own terms for a weather cancellation, and resellers add their own on top. These are the policies we could source:
- We Fly Teotihuacan (direct bookings): if it cannot fly on your date, it reschedules you to another sunrise free, at no extra cost. Its terms do not state a refund for weather.
- Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán (direct bookings): no refund for weather. The balloon flight is rescheduled free, but extras such as transport, lodging, ruins entry and restaurant are not recoverable. If you do not rebook at the venue, you have 90 calendar days to reschedule. Foreign visitors who can show a departing itinerary can be refunded, minus extra services already used.
- Civitatis (reseller, balloon and ruins tour): if weather prevents the flight, it refunds the price minus MX$420 per passenger for the ground transport, about $22.
- Arc Tours (Viator listing): if cancelled because of poor conditions, you will be offered another date.
El Universal summed up the pattern in 2026: in most cases operators offer rescheduling in the following days or a full refund, depending on each company’s policy. The phrase that matters is the last one. A full refund for weather is not universal, so if a refund matters more to you than a new date, read the operator’s terms or ask before you book. The listing for Skyteam’s flight with a natural-cave breakfast, like the other Viator flights we review, is marked free cancellation, which is a platform rule, not a promise about weather.
Viator’s 24-hour rule, and GetYourGuide’s
Viator’s standard policy is a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled start. It applies to the great majority of products, the times are in the supplier’s local time zone, and some listings carry different or stricter terms, so check the policy on yours. Every balloon listing in our offers data was marked free cancellation on 25 October 2026. The GetYourGuide balloon listings we track show the same wording: cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
Three practical points follow.
- The clock starts from the start time, which for a balloon morning is the pickup or check-in, often between 4:30 and 5:40 a.m. Cancelling at 9:00 a.m. the day before a 5:00 a.m. pickup is already inside the 24 hours.
- Mexico City is on UTC-6 all year. If you are cancelling from abroad before you travel, convert from that time.
- What Viator does when the operator itself cancels for weather is not stated on the policy page we used. If the operator offers a new date that you cannot use, contact Viator’s support through your booking and ask what it can do.
What happens to transport, breakfast and the ruins
What happens to the rest of the morning depends on what you bought, and from whom. Ask before booking whether the transport and breakfast move with a rescheduled flight.
- Transport inside the package: Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán does not refund transport when the flight is grounded, and Civitatis keeps MX$420 per person for it. Expect to have used the ride, even if you did not fly.
- A separately booked breakfast or ruins tour: it runs on its own terms. If you booked a guided pyramids tour for the same morning with another company, it does not move because the balloon did.
- The archaeological zone: it opens at 8:00, so a grounded morning can still become a ruins visit, on your own if the package does not continue. Entry, MX$210 for foreign visitors in 2026, is usually paid on site.
- Late arrival is not weather. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán gives only ten minutes’ tolerance after the appointment time, and a late passenger loses the transport without refund.

Rainy-season odds
No one publishes cancellation rates by month, and the 98% February success rate quoted by operators to El Universal is their own figure, not a measured statistic. What is measured is rainfall. At the SMN station in San Martín de las Pirámides, average monthly rain is under about 31 mm from November to April and climbs to 106 to 120 mm in June, July and August. The rainy season runs from about mid-May to October.
The summer rain in the Valley of Mexico mostly falls in the afternoon and evening, according to SMN-based forecasts, and balloons fly at dawn. We Fly says summer mornings are often fine, though a rainy dawn can ground the flights. So a July booking is not a lost cause, but it is where a backup morning earns its place. Winter brings the opposite risk: dry skies, with cold fronts that can bring strong gusts. Our best time guide has the month-by-month figures.
How to plan a backup morning
- Book the flight for your first or second morning in Mexico City, and leave at least one later morning free. A free reschedule is only useful while you are still in town.
- Keep the evening before quiet. Pickups run from about 4:30 a.m., and operators confirm the exact time the day before.
- Check the forecast two days ahead. If strong wind or rain is forecast and your listing allows free cancellation, decide before the 24-hour cutoff.
- If you book direct with an operator that refunds foreign visitors on proof of departure, as Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán does, carry a copy of your flight home.
- Bring photo ID. We Fly will not board a passenger without it, although it lets you reschedule.
- Have a plan B for a grounded morning. A ruins visit at opening time, or a guided tour such as the Teotihuacán early-access tour, uses the early start well.

Frequently asked questions
Do I get a refund if my Teotihuacán balloon flight is cancelled for weather?
Not always. We Fly and Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán reschedule for free and do not promise a refund, and a Civitatis tour refunds minus MX$420 for transport. Policies vary, so check yours before booking.
Who decides whether the balloons fly?
The pilot, on the morning, and since 2026 the AFAC commission in the valley also checks whether the weather allows flights. Strong wind, dense fog and prolonged rain are the usual reasons.
When can I cancel for a full refund on Viator?
At least 24 hours before the start time, in local time, on listings marked free cancellation. For a 5:00 a.m. pickup, that means by 5:00 a.m. the previous day.
Are flights cancelled often in the rainy season?
No monthly cancellation figures are published. Summer rain usually falls in the afternoon and evening, so many dawns are flyable, but keep a spare morning from May to October.
What happens to my transport if the flight is cancelled?
On some operators it is not refunded: Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán keeps extras, and Civitatis deducts MX$420 per person. If the operator reschedules a package, ask whether the transport and breakfast move with it.
