Teotihuacán balloon rides with kids: minimum flying age is 4 to 6 depending on the operator, and pyramid entry is free for children under 13

Children can fly over Teotihuacán, but the minimum age depends on the operator: 4 at most companies that state one, 5 at Volare and the Vuelo en globo Teotihuacán flights, and 6 at Paseos Olmedo. Some also require a height of at least 1.20 m. The harder part for a child is the morning itself, with a pickup around 4:30 a.m., a field near freezing in winter and a tall basket they stand in for up to an hour. Entry to the archaeological zone afterwards is free for under-13s.

Minimum ages by operator

There is no single rule for the valley. Each operator sets its own, and the same company can state it differently in different places. We Fly is the clearest example: its own website says children may fly with an adult and names no minimum age, while its Viator listing, flight with breakfast at La Gruta, says the minimum age to fly is 4. When two sources disagree, plan on the stricter one and ask before you book.

Four is the most common floor. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán does not fly children under 4 or shorter than 1.20 m, and requires minors to fly with an adult. Amigo Tours sets the same pair of rules on its Viator listing, at least 4 years old and taller than 1.20 m, and lists under-4s as not suitable on its GetYourGuide version, balloon flight with optional pyramids tour. Luxury Tours says its balloon flight is from 4 years of age, and the reseller Civitatis does not take under-4s either.

A few operators set the bar higher. Volare does not allow children under 5 on the flight. The two Vuelo en globo Teotihuacán listings on GetYourGuide mark under-5s as not suitable. Paseos Olmedo does not recommend its tour for children under 6.

Many of the big operators, including Viaja Teotihuacan, Tlatoani and Skyteam, state no minimum age on their listings at all. That is not the same as having none. Message the operator with your child’s age and height before you pay.

One more trap: some Viator listings carry generic notes such as “infants are required to sit on an adult’s lap” or “infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller.” The Luxury Tours listing has both notes and still says the balloon flight is from 4 years. Do not read them as permission to bring a baby into the basket. Amigo Tours bans strollers on its GetYourGuide listing.

What is hard for children

For most families the hours around the flight are the hard part, so it helps to know what is coming.

The start is very early. Hotel pickups typically run from about 4:30 to 5:30 a.m., and Explora México collects between 4:30 and 4:50. If you drive, We Fly suggests leaving Mexico City around 3:30 a.m. for a 5:30 check-in. Children will be woken in the dark and spend an hour in a vehicle before anything happens.

The field is cold. At the San Martín de las Pirámides weather station the average night-time low is about 2 °C in December, 1.7 °C in January and 2 °C in February, and frost is possible in winter. From May to September the average low is a milder 8 to 9 °C. You will stand outside through check-in, inflation and the flight, so dress a child in layers, a hat and closed shoes. Our what to wear guide has the list. If your package includes a cave breakfast, bring the layers inside too: Chilango describes La Gruta’s cave as cool, at about 6 °C.

The basket is tall, and there is no seat. We Fly notes that very small children may need lifting to see over the edge. Tlatoani does not recommend the flight for anyone with a problem standing, and you climb into the basket to board. For a 4-year-old that can mean being held up for much of a 45 to 60 minute flight.

You cannot bring much. Amigo Tours does not allow backpacks, bags or bulky objects in the basket, and Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán has lockers for bags. Plan on carrying snacks and spare layers in pockets, not a day bag. Selfie sticks are banned too.

The day is long. An all-inclusive package with breakfast and the ruins runs 7 to 9 hours, after a 4:30 a.m. start. The duration guide shows how each option splits the time.

The pyramids with children

Children under 13 enter the archaeological zone free, according to INAH’s 2026 bulletin. Adults who are foreign visitors pay MX$210, and admission is not included in most balloon packages. The zone opens at 8:00, which fits after landing and breakfast. INAH recommends water, a hat and sunscreen, and the day warms fast: average highs at the San Martín de las Pirámides station run about 24 to 29 °C.

Keep expectations simple for climbers. The Pyramid of the Sun cannot be climbed, and INAH closed the Pyramid of the Moon to climbers “until further notice” in April 2026; we found no reopening announcement. Children see the monuments from the Avenue of the Dead, which is a long walk end to end.

Family-friendly ways to do it

Cut the early start. Sleeping in San Juan Teotihuacán the night before saves the most time: We Fly sells a hotel night with a 15-minute transfer to its field. Pair it with a flight-only option and the morning shrinks to about 3 hours at the balloon port. See our where to stay page and the flight-only page.

Keep the logistics in one place. Volare serves its Mexican breakfast at the balloon port after the flight, so there is no extra transfer to a restaurant before the ruins. Its no-transport option counts 3 hours from arrival; our Volare review has the details.

Go private on the road. Luxury Tours’ private tour with a shared balloon collects you from your hotel or house in an SUV or minivan, includes the archaeological zone tickets and a guided visit, and flies children from 4. It cost about $360 per person on dates we checked in late October 2026, and our Luxury Tours review covers it. The private balloon rides page compares baskets reserved for your group.

Split the party if a child is too young. One adult flies while the other takes the younger child to breakfast and meets up at the zone gates at 8:00.

Listings price per person and we found no published child fares, so ask whether a child pays the adult rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age for a Teotihuacán balloon ride?

It depends on the operator. Most that state an age take children from 4; Volare and the Vuelo en globo Teotihuacán flights from 5; Paseos Olmedo recommends 6 and up. Some add a 1.20 m height rule.

Can a baby or toddler fly in the balloon?

Not with the operators that publish a rule, which start at 4. We Fly’s website names no minimum, but its Viator listing says 4, so ask first.

Do children pay full price?

The listings we checked quote per-person prices and publish no child fare. Ask the operator before booking.

Is it too cold for kids?

Winter dawns at the field average about 2 °C and can drop below freezing. Dress children in layers, a hat and gloves. Mornings from May to September are milder.

Do kids pay to enter the pyramids?

No. INAH lists children under 13 as exempt from the admission fee.
