Most Teotihuacán balloon operators include passengers up to about 100 kg in the ticket price and charge extra above that, either MXN 35 per extra kilo (Viaja Teotihuacan, Skyteam, Cielo Azteca and others) or a fixed band fee of MXN 500 for 100 to 120 kg and MXN 1,000 for 120 to 140 kg (Tlatoani). A few set a hard maximum, from 120 kg at Volare to 150 kg at Amigo Tours. Pregnancy rules you out or is “not recommended” with every operator that mentions it, and most also list spinal and heart conditions.
How the weight surcharges work
Two models cover almost every operator in the valley. The first is a charge per kilo above a threshold. Viaja Teotihuacan, on its balloon flight with cave breakfast, charges MXN 35 per extra kilo above 100 kg (220 lb). Skyteam, Cielo Azteca, Visita Teotihuacan, Teotihuacán Feliz, Explora México and Arc Tours all quote the same MXN 35 a kilo above 100 kg. Vive Vuela charges MXN 30 a kilo above 100 kg, and We Fly’s two Viator listings set the threshold lower, MXN 35 a kilo above 99 kg. We Fly’s own website states a different rule again, MXN 50 a kilo above 95 kg, charged at reception on the day.
The second model is a fixed fee by weight band. Tlatoani, on its balloon flight with pickup, cave breakfast and pyramids, adds MXN 500 per person if you weigh more than 100 kg and up to 120 kg, and MXN 1,000 above 120 kg and up to 140 kg (308 lb). Teotihuacan Adventures uses the same two bands and adds a third, MXN 1,500 above 140 kg.
What it costs in dollars, at about MXN 18.7 to the dollar in October 2026: at 110 kg, the per-kilo model is MXN 350, about $19, and the band model MXN 500, about $27. At 130 kg, the per-kilo model is MXN 1,050, about $56, and the band model MXN 1,000, about $54. On We Fly’s website rule, 110 kg would be 15 kilos at MXN 50, or MXN 750, about $40.
The surcharge is paid on the day, not when you book. We Fly charges it at reception, Fly Teotihuacan at the launch site, and the reseller Civitatis, which charges US$3 a kilo above 99 kg on its own listing, at take-off. Carry enough to cover it; the listings do not say whether cards are accepted.
Why weight matters in a basket
A shared balloon carries several passengers in one basket, and operators ask for each passenger’s weight before the flight. Some state it as a legal requirement. Amigo Tours’ Viator listing says that by order of the Mexican government it must collect each passenger’s name, weight and health conditions. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán tells passengers to report their true weight and health.
The weight also decides where you stand. Tlatoani’s listing warns that the pilot may ask some passengers to move to the other side of the basket to keep the weight properly distributed. If you are traveling as a couple or a family, you may not stand together for the whole flight.
Some operators draw a hard line above which they will not fly you at all:
- Volare’s maximum weight per person is 120 kg (265 lb).
- Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán does not fly passengers over 140 kg, and Globo Tetris says people over 140 kg are not admitted.
- Amigo Tours sets its maximum at 150 kg.
Teotihuacan Adventures charges MXN 1,500 above 140 kg and states no upper limit; ask before you book. Under-reporting your weight to save a few hundred pesos is a poor bet: the surcharge is collected at the field, and an operator with a hard limit will not fly you above it. If you are near a limit, message the operator with your weight first and get the answer in writing.
On dates we checked in late October 2026, Tlatoani cost about $157 for the flight alone, $201 with the cave breakfast and $240 all-inclusive. Our Tlatoani review covers the options, and the prices page compares every operator.

Pregnancy and health restrictions
Every operator that mentions pregnancy rules it out or advises against it. Viaja Teotihuacan is the strictest in wording: its listing says balloon flights are prohibited for pregnant people regardless of the month of pregnancy, and also prohibits flying with heart problems, recent surgery, back or spine problems, knee problems, or under the influence of alcohol or any other substance.
Tlatoani does not recommend the flight for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, travelers with poor cardiovascular health, travelers with prostheses of any type, or travelers who are missing a limb or have a problem standing. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán lists pregnancy, high blood pressure, recent fractures or injuries, heart and breathing problems, recent surgery, spine or knee problems, fear of heights and vertigo, and refuses anyone drunk without a refund. Amigo Tours’ GetYourGuide listing adds respiratory issues and high blood pressure, and the Vuelo en globo Teotihuacán listings add a fear of heights.
Most other Viator listings carry the same three lines: not recommended for spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health. We Fly’s website says there is no strict upper age limit if you are in good health, and asks you to contact it before booking about mobility or weight.
If you have a condition on these lists, ask your doctor and the operator before you pay, and read the safety guide for what you can check about an operator.
Mobility and wheelchair access
You board by climbing into the basket and you stand for the whole flight, so limited mobility is the restriction most likely to stop you. Amigo Tours lists people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users as not suitable, and the reseller Civitatis says its balloon tour is not wheelchair accessible.
Three Viator listings, Volare, Cielo Azteca and Arc Tours, carry a “wheelchair accessible” tag. Volare’s own note qualifies it: for certain disabilities participation may not be possible, so consult the provider before booking. Treat the tag as a starting point for that conversation. If you need extra time or help boarding, ask whether a private basket is available on your date.

Frequently asked questions
What is the weight limit for a Teotihuacán balloon ride?
Most operators include up to about 100 kg, some 95 or 99 kg, and charge above that. Hard maximums we found are 120 kg (Volare), 140 kg (Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán, Globo Tetris) and 150 kg (Amigo Tours).
How much is the overweight charge?
Usually MXN 35 per kilo above 100 kg, or MXN 500 for 100 to 120 kg and MXN 1,000 for 120 to 140 kg at operators such as Tlatoani. It is paid on the day.
Can I fly if I am pregnant?
No operator that addresses it allows or recommends it. Viaja Teotihuacan prohibits it at any stage of pregnancy.
Why does the pilot ask passengers to move in the basket?
To balance the weight. Tlatoani’s listing says the pilot may move some passengers to the other side of the basket for proper weight distribution.
Can wheelchair users take a balloon ride?
It depends on the operator and the disability. You must climb into the basket and stand. Ask the operator directly; Volare, which carries a wheelchair-accessible tag, says some disabilities may prevent participation.
