Shared versus private Teotihuacán balloon ride for two: about $274 for two shared flight-only seats against $1,017 for a private basket

For most visitors a shared basket is the right call: same launch field, same sky, same 30 to 60 minutes in the air, from about $137 a seat for the flight alone. Pay for a private basket if the flight is a proposal or anniversary, or if you want the whole rim for photographs; that costs about $476 per person with Teotihuacán Feliz or $1,017 for two with Zuyuá. Before paying the premium, check the balloon line: several “private” tours give you a private car and guide, then a seat in a shared basket.

What “private” means on a Teotihuacán listing

The word covers three different products, and the listing title rarely tells you which one you are buying. Viator tags all four of the private-sounding tours we review with the same “private tour” flag, whether or not the balloon is private.

Fully shared. You join a group van from a central pickup point (or drive yourself), check in with everyone else, and fly in a basket with strangers. This is what the headline prices on almost every listing buy.

Private transport and guide, shared basket. A driver collects you from your own hotel, a guide stays with you for the day, and the pyramids visit is just your party. At the balloon port you join a shared basket like everyone else. Excellentravel says so plainly on its listing: “The balloon flight is shared in small groups, while transport and the pyramids tour are completely private.” Luxury Tours lists a shared hot-air balloon among its inclusions and a private balloon as an extra cost. Arc Tours sells a private-transport option for two, and its listing still includes a shared balloon ride.

Private basket. Only your party flies in the basket with the pilot. Of the flights we review, two are sold this way: Zuyuá’s private sunrise balloon for two and Teotihuacán Feliz’s private balloon flight. Fly Teotihuacan also lists a private flight for two on GetYourGuide, with no reviews yet.

The test is simple. Find the line in the listing that describes the balloon, not the transport, and look for “shared” or “private”. If it is not clear, message the operator before you book and keep the answer in writing.

What a shared basket is like

Operators do not publish how many passengers their shared baskets carry, and the number varies with the balloon and the day’s load. Reviews give a sense of it. One Excellentravel reviewer described meeting “two other couples” and going up as six; a Visita Teotihuacan Mexico reviewer complained of five people on their side of the basket and advised making sure no more than four share yours. Tlatoani Tours warns that the pilot may ask passengers to move to the other side of the basket to balance the weight.

Everything else is the same as in a private basket. You check in around 5:30 a.m., watch the inflation, lift off at first light and fly for usually 30 to 60 minutes, with landing, toast and certificate afterwards. The route depends on the wind for every balloon in the valley, private or shared, and more than 20 companies operate there, so you share the sky with dozens of other envelopes either way.

What you give up in a shared basket is space and control: a spot at the rim you may have to swap, strangers in your photos, and a group pace through the morning. What you gain is price. On dates we checked in late October 2026, Skyteam Teotihuacán charged about $137 for the flight alone and Viaja Teotihuacan about $236 with hotel transport, the cave breakfast and a workshop. Our prices page compares every shared option.

The private baskets: Zuyuá and Teotihuacán Feliz

Zuyuá’s Private Sunrise Balloon for 2 is priced per group of up to two, about $1,017 (MX$18,500), so a solo traveller pays the same as a couple. It is the most complete package of the private options: round-trip transport from Mexico City in an air-conditioned vehicle, coffee before the flight, the sunrise flight, breakfast, a certified guide at Teotihuacán, tickets, insurance and parking. It runs about 6.5 hours and is rated 4.9 from 40 reviews. The downside to know: one review describes a missed pickup after a confirmation mix-up, so answer the operator’s message the day before. Teotihuacán Feliz’s private balloon flight costs about $476 per person, or about $952 for two. It includes private transportation and breakfast. Despite “Entry” in its title, the listing excludes the archaeological-zone ticket, so budget MX$210 each for the gate. It is rated 5.0 from 20 reviews, and one reviewer confirms the basket held only “my wife and me”.

For a couple the two land within about $65 of each other. Zuyuá includes the guide and tickets; Teotihuacán Feliz prices per person, so it costs less for a couple and much less for a solo traveller.

Price for two, side by side

Per-person prices are from the operators’ schedules on dates we checked in late October 2026. Zone entry is MX$210 (about $11) per person where it is not included.

Read the table as three steps. Moving from shared to private transport adds about $220 for two with Excellentravel. Moving from a private car to a private basket adds roughly another $230 to $300 for two. And a private basket costs three to four times a flight-only shared seat.

Private car, shared basket: the middle option

For many couples this is the sweet spot. You skip the van loop round other hotels, keep your own guide at the ruins and get back when you planned, and you still fly at the shared price.

Excellentravel’s balloon flight with private transport sells both versions of the same day: about $357 per person with a private vehicle and guide, or about $247 with shared transport and tour. Both include breakfast at a local restaurant, entry and a guided visit of about 2.5 hours, with return around 1:00 p.m. Photos during the flight are not included. Rated 4.9 from 123 reviews. Luxury Tours’ private tour and shared balloon ride costs about $360 per person and includes the archaeological-zone tickets, a guided visit, breakfast, drinks and a stop at an obsidian craft house. A private balloon is an extra charge, so ask for a quote if you want both. Rated 4.9 from 25 reviews. Our review →

Arc Tours is the budget version: about $236 per person for private transport for two, or $209 shared, without zone entry or a guide at the site.

Who should pay for a private basket

Worth it:

  • Proposals, anniversaries and honeymoons. A private basket keeps the moment free of an audience.
  • Photographers. You get the whole rim and no strangers in the frame; our balloon photo guide covers the rest.
  • Nervous flyers who would find a full basket stressful, and groups who want to fly together without strangers, if the operator can take your number.

Not worth it:

  • Solo travellers and budget trips. Zuyuá charges the same for one as for two.
  • Anyone paying to get closer to the pyramids. A private basket does not change the wind, and no operator guarantees a route.
  • Anyone hoping for better weather odds. Private flights face the same weather, and a windy morning grounds them too.

All four private-sounding tours above are marked as free cancellation on Viator, whose standard policy is a full refund up to 24 hours before the start. Weather cancellations follow each operator’s terms, so read them for your option.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private balloon ride at Teotihuacán?

On dates we checked in late October 2026, about $476 per person with Teotihuacán Feliz, or about $1,017 for a group of up to two with Zuyuá. Add MX$210 per person for zone entry with Teotihuacán Feliz.

Is a “private tour” the same as a private balloon?

No. Excellentravel, Luxury Tours and Arc Tours sell private transport and guiding but put you in a shared basket. Check the line that describes the balloon itself.

How many people are in a shared basket?

Operators do not publish it. Reviewers describe sharing with four or five others on their side or in their group, and the pilot may move passengers to balance the weight.

Does a private balloon fly closer to the pyramids?

No. Every balloon goes where the wind takes it, and operators say reaching the archaeological zone depends on the day’s conditions.

Can one person book a private basket?

Yes, but Zuyuá prices per group of up to two, so a solo traveller pays the full $1,017. Teotihuacán Feliz prices per person.
