Teotihuacán’s balloon ports are launch fields in the valley around the archaeological zone, mostly in San Martín de las Pirámides, roughly 45 to 50 km by road northeast of Mexico City. You have three realistic ways to be there for a check-in between about 5:30 and 6:00 a.m.: the operator’s hotel transfer, driving yourself in the dark, or sleeping in San Juan Teotihuacán the night before. Public buses do not run early enough, and your operator sends the exact location the day before.
Where the balloon ports actually are
The balloons do not take off from the pyramids, and they do not take off from Mexico City. The launch fields, which operators call “globopuertos” or balloon ports, are spread across the farmland around the zone. A state official quoted in February 2026 said about 90% of balloons take off from San Martín de las Pirámides, and most flights land in Teotihuacán municipality unless the weather turns.
Operators publish addresses, not field names. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán gives Carretera México-Tulancingo km 28.2, San Martín de las Pirámides. Amigo Tours sends flight-only guests on its balloon flight with optional pyramids tour to the Balloon’s Paradise port in San Martín de las Pirámides (postcode 55850). The two Vuelo en globo Teotihuacán flights on GetYourGuide meet at Av. de la Amistad s/n, San Francisco Mazapa, Teotihuacán. Viaja Teotihuacan says its base is 5 minutes from the Pemex Pirámides gas station, Visita Teotihuacan says you will find it on Google as Gran Vuelo Teotihuacan, and We Fly puts its reception 5 minutes from the archaeological zone.
One trap catches self-drivers. We Fly’s online FAQ prints the coordinates 19.6925, -98.8438 as its balloon port, but those are the coordinates of the centre of the archaeological site, the Pyramid of the Sun. Type them into a map app at 4:30 a.m. and you will end up at a closed monument. Use the pin your operator sends, not a set of coordinates copied from a website.
Each company has its own field and reception, so “the balloon port” means your operator’s, not a shared terminal. If you have booked through Viator or GetYourGuide, the meeting point on your voucher is the one that counts.
How operators send you the location
For flight-only bookings, most operators confirm the place and time the day before. Viaja Teotihuacan, on its balloon flight with cave breakfast, says it sends a message one day ahead with the exact Google Maps location and your arrival time. Skyteam, Teotihuacan Adventures, Visita Teotihuacan, Explora México and Vive Vuela say the same on their listings. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán has a sales adviser confirm the time the day before and allows only 10 minutes’ tolerance: arrive later and you lose the transport without a refund.
That message comes from the operator, not from Viator or GetYourGuide, so check that the phone number on your booking works in Mexico and keep data roaming on. If nothing has arrived by the afternoon before your flight, message the operator through the booking platform straight away.
Bring the ID you booked with. We Fly says it checks a valid government photo ID (a passport works) at reception to register you under the flight insurance, and without it you cannot board, though you can reschedule. Ask your operator whether it applies the same rule. We Fly also asks guests to arrive at least 30 minutes before flight time.
On dates we checked in late October 2026, flight-only options without transport ran from about $136 to $159 per person. The prices guide breaks down what each package adds, and the flight-only page compares the options for people who make their own way.
Driving from Mexico City in the dark
The route is the Mexico-Pachuca motorway (Mex 85D) north via Avenida Insurgentes Norte, then the Ecatepec-Pirámides toll road. INAH lists that route for the archaeological zone, with the Mexico-Tuxpan road, the Arco Norte and the free Mexico-Teotihuacán road as alternatives. Expect tolls; we have not found a confirmed 2026 tariff, so carry pesos and a card.
Daytime estimates run from 45 minutes (We Fly’s FAQ) to about an hour (the bus company and most press). Before dawn there is little traffic, so plan on roughly 45 to 60 minutes from Centro, Roma, Condesa or Polanco, and add a few minutes from the western neighborhoods. We Fly tells self-drivers to leave Mexico City around 3:30 a.m. for a 5:30 check-in, which leaves room for a wrong turn.
It will be fully dark for the whole drive. Sunrise at Teotihuacán is around 6:33 in late October and 7:05 in late December, and as early as 5:57 in late June. Mexico City stays on UTC-6 all year, so there is no clock change to catch you out.
| Operator | Where flight-only guests go | Location sent |
|---|---|---|
| Viaja Teotihuacan | Base 5 min from Pemex Pirámides | Google Maps pin the day before |
| Visita Teotihuacan | Offices in Teotihuacán (Gran Vuelo Teotihuacan) | Day before |
| Amigo Tours (Balloon’s Paradise) | San Martín de las Pirámides 55850 | On the listing |
| Volare | Volare balloon port | Listed meeting point |
| Cielo Azteca | Its take-off area, with secure parking | Listed meeting point |
| We Fly | Reception 5 min from the zone | Listed meeting point |
Parking is on site at the operators that mention it: We Fly offers free parking and Cielo Azteca a secure lot at its take-off area. The Volare flight without transport counts 3 hours from arrival at its port to departure. Our Volare review covers the rest.
Why public buses cannot get you there
Autobuses Teotihuacán runs from Terminal Central del Norte, but its ticket window at platform 7 opens at 6:00 a.m. and takes cash only. By then you should already be at the field. The buses also stop at gates 1 and 2 of the archaeological zone, not at the launch fields in San Martín de las Pirámides. The Metro Potrero and Potrero-Apan bus route has the same problem.
The bus is a good way to visit the ruins later in the day, with returns from gate 2 every 15 minutes. It is not a way to reach a sunrise flight.
Ride-hailing and taxis at 4 a.m.
We have found no reliable source on whether Uber, DiDi or a street taxi will take you from Mexico City to a launch field before dawn, what it costs, or whether you can get a car back from San Martín de las Pirámides. Do not leave it to the morning. Arrange it the evening before: book a hotel taxi or a private driver, agree the pickup time and the address from your operator’s pin, and settle how you will get back.
The return is the harder half. Many flight-only guests head to the ruins after landing, and the zone opens at 8:00, so ask your operator whether it can drop you at a gate or call a local taxi.
Transfers and staying in San Juan Teotihuacán
For most visitors the operator’s transfer removes the problem. Pickups typically run between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. and are confirmed the day before. Not every address qualifies: We Fly picks up free within 4 km of the Angel of Independence, Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán does not collect from private homes or Airbnbs, and Arc Tours and Amigo Tours meet at the Angel itself. The rides from Mexico City page compares pickup zones and times.
The other route is to sleep near the field. We Fly sells a Teotihuacán hotel night with a 15-minute transfer to the field, which spares you the 3:30 a.m. departure. A night in San Juan Teotihuacán also puts you close to the ruins after landing. Our where to stay page lists hotels near the launch area.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Teotihuacán balloon port?
Each operator has its own launch field and reception in the valley around the archaeological zone, mostly in San Martín de las Pirámides. Use the location your operator sends the day before, not the pyramid coordinates printed on some websites.
Can I take a bus to my sunrise balloon flight?
No. The Terminal Norte ticket window opens at 6:00 a.m., after most check-ins, and the buses stop at the zone gates, not the launch fields.
Can I take an Uber to the balloon ride?
We could not confirm that ride-hailing works reliably at 4 a.m. or for the return. Book a hotel taxi or private driver the evening before, or choose a package with transport.
How long is the drive from Mexico City?
Roughly 45 to 60 minutes before dawn from the central neighborhoods, on the Mexico-Pachuca motorway and the Ecatepec-Pirámides toll road.
Is there parking at the balloon port?
At the operators that mention it, yes: We Fly offers free parking and Cielo Azteca a secure lot. Ask yours when it sends the location.
