How Booking a Balloon Ride Works
Four simple steps to your booking.
Decide how you will get there
Staying in Mexico City without a car? Pick an option with round-trip transport. Driving yourself or sleeping in San Juan Teotihuacán? The flight-only option is usually $60 to $90 cheaper on the listings we review.
Choose the option, not the headline price
The from-price on most listings is the flight alone. Open the options and pick the one that matches what you want: breakfast, transport, time at the pyramids.
Watch for the day-before message
Operators confirm the exact pickup time or the balloon port location the day before. Pickups from central Mexico City typically fall between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m.
Bring ID, layers and pesos
Take a photo ID for check-in, warm layers for a cold dawn and cash for the archaeological zone, which most packages do not include.

Choosing
Which Teotihuacán Balloon Ride to Book
If you are staying in Mexico City and this is your first balloon flight, book the Viaja Teotihuacan balloon flight with cave breakfast and Mexico City pickup and choose its full option. On dates we checked in late October 2026 that option was about $236 per person, against about $148 for the flight alone, and it covers hotel transport, a shared sunrise flight, breakfast in a natural cave and time at the pyramids. Rated 4.9 from 8,158 reviews, it is the most-reviewed balloon listing on this site. Pick a different ride if you are driving yourself, want a guide at the ruins or want a basket to yourselves. Our review →
Every ride below flies over the Teotihuacán valley, about an hour northeast of Mexico City, not over the city. Whether the balloon passes over the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon or beside them depends on the wind that morning, and no operator guarantees the route.
First-timers staying in Mexico City: an all-inclusive package
Without a car, and with a hotel in Centro, Roma, Condesa or along Reforma, an all-inclusive package makes the morning simple: a pickup typically between about 4:30 and 5:30 a.m., the flight, a toast and certificate on landing, breakfast, then free time at the archaeological zone before the drive back. Viaja Teotihuacan’s full option adds a visit to a cooperative with an explanation of obsidian and quartz.
The downside is cost and pace. You pay about $88 more than the flight alone, you keep to a group schedule, and the archaeological-zone ticket (MX$210 for foreign visitors in 2026) is not included. Similar packages from other operators cost about the same: Tlatoani’s all-inclusive was about $240 and Skyteam’s flight with cave breakfast and transport about $211. Our page on rides with pickup from Mexico City covers pickup zones and timings.
Budget travelers and self-drivers: flight only
If you have a car or are sleeping near the pyramids, a flight-only option is the lowest-cost way up. Of the flights we review, Skyteam’s flight-only option was the lowest at MXN 2,500, about $137 per person. You get the location of the balloon port in advance and make your own way there before dawn. Breakfast and transport are not included, though you can add the cave breakfast for about $181 in total.
The catch is the drive. Public buses to Teotihuacán start too late for a sunrise check-in and stop at the archaeological-zone gates, not at the launch fields, so flight only works for drivers and for people staying locally. Our flight-only page lists every option and what each includes. Our Skyteam review →
History-first visitors: balloon plus a guided pyramids tour
Most packages give you free time at the ruins but no guide and no ticket. The Excellentravel balloon flight with pyramids tour includes both: entrance to the archaeological zone, a guided visit of about two and a half hours with a SECTUR-certified guide, and breakfast at a local restaurant. With shared transport it was about $247 per person; with private transport and a private guided tour, about $357. That is roughly what a cave-breakfast package plus the MX$210 ticket comes to, with a guide added. It has 123 reviews, far fewer than the big operators, and the listing asks for at least moderate fitness. Our balloon and pyramids tour page compares the guided options. Our review →
The Pyramid of the Sun cannot be climbed, and access to the Pyramid of the Moon was closed again in April 2026 with no reopening announced that we could find.
Breakfast at La Gruta
La Gruta is a restaurant inside a natural volcanic cave, behind the Pyramid of the Sun. Several listings serve breakfast in a cave restaurant; We Fly and Paseos Olmedo name La Gruta. The We Fly flight with breakfast at La Gruta was about $203 per person without transport, about $231 for its all-included option from Mexico City and about $274 for an express return to the city after breakfast. The listing warns that waiting time outside the restaurant is beyond its control. We Fly sets its maximum weight at 99 kg, with a penalty above it. More in balloon rides with breakfast. Our review →
Couples and celebrations: a private basket
Shared baskets carry a group of strangers. For a proposal or an anniversary, the Zuyuá private sunrise balloon for two was about $1,017 for the pair, with pickup, breakfast, a certified guide at Teotihuacán and tickets included. It has 40 reviews. Teotihuacán Feliz’s private balloon flight was about $476 per person with private transport and breakfast, though its listing excludes the archaeological-zone ticket. Either way you pay several times the shared price. See private balloon rides. Our Zuyuá review →
Booking on GetYourGuide with flexible options
If you would rather book on GetYourGuide, Amigo Tours’ Teotihuacán balloon flight with optional pyramids tour sells four options on one listing: flight only, flight with breakfast, flight with breakfast and transport, and a full day adding a guided visit to Teotihuacán and the Basilica of Guadalupe with entrance. Prices started from $148, cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead and you can reserve now and pay later. Its rating is lower, 4.6 from 1,285 reviews. The self-drive option meets at the Balloon’s Paradise port in San Martín de las Pirámides; a Balloons Paradise balloon made an emergency landing beside the Pyramid of the Sun on 21 April 2026, and AFAC and SICT said they were investigating. Our safety guide explains what to check before you book any operator. Our review →

Choosing a Teotihuacán Balloon Ride: FAQ
Short answers on which ride to book, what is included and what the listings do not promise.
If you are staying in Mexico City, an all-inclusive package with hotel transport and breakfast. Our pick is Viaja Teotihuacan's full option, about $236 per person on dates we checked in late October 2026, rated 4.9 from 8,158 reviews. If you have a car, a flight-only option from about $137 does the same flight for less. See our Viaja Teotihuacan review.
Not over the city, and not on a fixed route. Balloons launch in the Teotihuacán valley, around San Martín de las Pirámides, about an hour northeast of Mexico City. Operators steer for winds that carry them toward the archaeological zone, but whether you pass over the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon or beside them depends on the wind that morning. More in do balloons fly over the pyramids.
Usually not. Most packages give you free time at the pyramids but leave the ticket to you: MX$210 for foreign visitors in 2026, with under-13s and over-60s exempt. A few packages include it, such as the Excellentravel balloon and guided pyramids tour and the Zuyuá private balloon for two. Check the option's inclusions before you book.
Shared, unless the morning is a celebration. A private basket for two was about $1,017 for the pair on the Zuyuá listing, several times the shared price. Shared flights from Mexico City with breakfast cost about $186 to $240 per person. Our shared vs private guide sets out the trade-offs.
The pilot decides on the morning, and operators reschedule or refund on their own terms, so read the listing's policy. On Viator, listings marked free cancellation give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start time. See weather and cancellations.
Most operators charge extra above about 100 kg. Viaja Teotihuacan and Skyteam charge MXN 35 per extra kilo, Tlatoani charges MXN 500 from 100 to 120 kg and MXN 1,000 from 120 to 140 kg, and We Fly sets its limit at 99 kg. Details in our weight limits guide.
