How It Works
Four simple steps to your booking.
Choose the option, not just the listing
Most listings sell several options. The headline price is usually the flight alone; hotel pickup, the cave breakfast and a guided pyramids visit cost more.
Book a morning early in your trip
Flights depend on the wind at dawn. An early date leaves room to reschedule if the operator cancels for weather.
Confirm pickup the day before
Operators send the pickup time or the balloon port location by message the day before. Pickups from Mexico City usually leave between about 4:30 and 5:40 a.m.
Fly at sunrise, then explore
You fly for roughly 45 to 60 minutes, land with a toast and a certificate, and most packages continue to breakfast and the archaeological zone.
How a flight morning runs
A Balloon Morning, Hour by Hour
What first-timers often don't realize is how little of the morning is actually spent in the air. The flight itself usually lasts around 45 to 60 minutes, while the full experience can take five to nine hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. Despite the pre-dawn pickup, you don't fly in the dark. Balloons lift off around first light, putting you in the air around sunrise.
- Pickup in the dark, about 4:30–5:40 a.m. — Hotel pickups from Mexico City typically leave between about 4:30 and 5:40, and the operator sends the exact time the day before. Be ready early: one operator, Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán, allows only 10 minutes' grace before the van leaves without you.
- The drive northeast — Roughly 45 to 60 minutes up the Mexico–Pachuca motorway to the launch fields around San Martín de las Pirámides, beside the archaeological zone. If you booked flight only, this is your own drive.
- Check-in and coffee, about 5:30 — We Fly asks guests to be at reception around 5:30 for check-in and coffee. Bring photo ID: some operators register every passenger under the flight insurance and will not board you without it.
- Inflation and lift-off at first light — You watch the crew inflate the balloon, then climb into the basket once it stands. Lift-off follows the light, which moves with the season: sunrise at Teotihuacán is about 7:05 in late December, 6:38 in late March, 5:57 in late June and 6:33 in late October.
- The flight, 45–60 minutes — Operators quote anything from 30 to 60 minutes in the air, most often 45 to 60. The wind sets the route, so the balloon may pass over the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon or keep to one side of them.
- Landing, toast and certificate — The ground crew meets the balloon where it lands. Operators mark the landing with a sparkling-wine toast and hand out a personalized flight certificate.
- Breakfast, if your package includes it — Packages with breakfast continue to a restaurant, sometimes a cave restaurant such as La Gruta. Flight-only tickets end at the toast.
- The pyramids, from 8:00 — The archaeological zone opens at 8:00, so a visit fits after breakfast. Admission (MX$210 for foreign visitors in 2026) is not included in most balloon packages, and the Pyramid of the Sun cannot be climbed.
- Back in the city, about 10:00 or 14:30 — One operator's schedule gives the range: back in Mexico City around 10:00 if you return straight after the flight, or around 14:30 with a visit to the ruins.

How to Choose a Teotihuacán Balloon Ride
Where the flights really are, what the headline price leaves out, how early you will leave and what decides the view.
For most first-time visitors staying in Mexico City, start by comparing flights with round-trip transfers and an optional visit to the archaeological site. It solves the hardest part of the morning, reaching a balloon field about an hour away before dawn. Our pick is the Viaja Teotihuacan balloon flight with cave breakfast and hotel transport: about $236 per person with transport and breakfast on dates we checked in late October 2026, rated 4.9 from 8,158 reviews on Viator, more reviews than any other listing we track. Our review →
The flights are not over the city
No balloon on this site takes off in Mexico City or flies over its skyline. The flights operate over the Teotihuacán valley in the State of Mexico, roughly 45 to 50 km northeast of the city by road. Most balloons launch around San Martín de las Pirámides, beside the Teotihuacán archaeological zone; a state official put the share of take-offs there at about 90% in February 2026. The drive takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes, and our page on balloon rides from Mexico City compares the transfers.
What the headline price buys
The “from” price at the top of almost every listing is the flight alone: you drive yourself to the balloon port and there is no breakfast. On dates we checked in late October 2026, Viaja Teotihuacan’s flight-only option cost about $148 and its package with hotel transport and the cave breakfast about $236. Skyteam Teotihuacán sold the flight alone for about $137, the flight with a cave breakfast but no transport for about $181, and the full package from the city for about $211. Our Skyteam review →
Admission to the archaeological zone is a separate cost on most packages. INAH charges foreign visitors MX$210 in 2026, about $11, and both Viaja and Skyteam list it as not included. A private basket sits in another price band: Zuyuá’s private sunrise balloon for two was about $1,017 for the pair, with transport, breakfast and a guided pyramids visit. The Teotihuacán balloon ride prices page sets out every tier side by side.
Choosing a package
Most listings sell the same sunrise flight in several options, so the real choice is what you add to it. Our comparison of the best Teotihuacán balloon rides matches each package to a type of traveler. In short:
- Staying in Mexico City without a car: book an option with round-trip transport. It costs more, but solves the pre-dawn transport problem.
- Driving yourself, or sleeping near the pyramids: the flight-only option is the cheapest way into the air.
- Here for the cave breakfast: We Fly’s La Gruta package was about $203 if you make your own way there and about $274 with transport and an early return to the city. We Fly warns that the wait outside the restaurant is beyond its control. Our page on balloon rides with breakfast compares the cave options.
- Here for the history: a balloon and guided pyramids tour adds a guide on the ground, which most shared packages leave out.
- Couples and celebrations: a private basket costs several times a shared seat.
Pickup and the pre-dawn start
Hotel pickups from Mexico City typically leave between about 4:30 and 5:40 a.m., and operators confirm the exact time the day before. We Fly asks guests to be at its reception for check-in and coffee around 5:30, with photo ID. We Fly says its free pickup covers hotels within 4 km of the Angel of Independence, in Reforma, Juárez, Zona Rosa, the Centro Histórico, Roma and Condesa, and quotes farther areas on request; Polanco is not on that list. Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán says its transport does not collect from private homes or Airbnbs.
Public transport will not get you there in time. The Autobuses Teotihuacán ticket window at Terminal Norte opens at 6:00, and the buses stop at the archaeological zone’s gates, not at the launch fields.
When to go
Balloons fly all year, but the dry season from November to April is steadier. Historical averages from the national weather service’s San Martín de las Pirámides station show about 31 mm of rain a month or less in those months, against 106 to 120 mm from June to August. Dry-season dawns are cold: the average minimum is about 2 to 4 °C from December to March, and frost is possible in midwinter. Winter cold fronts bring gusts: on 1 February 2026, every flight in the valley was cancelled for wind. In the rainy season, showers in the Valley of Mexico usually arrive in the afternoon or evening, so many summer mornings still fly. The best time for a Teotihuacán balloon ride goes month by month.
What you actually see
The wind decides the route. Operators say they look for currents that carry the balloons toward the archaeological zone, but none promises it, and Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán states that it does not guarantee any direction or route. On a good morning you see the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Avenue of the Dead from above; on others you watch them from one side of the valley. Read do balloons fly over the Teotihuacán pyramids? before you count on a particular shot.
When the flight is cancelled
The pilot decides each morning whether to launch, and balloons fly only in light winds; fog and prolonged rain also ground them. Cancelling on your side is simpler: Viator’s standard policy, which applies to all four flights in our comparison table, is a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start time. A weather cancellation is handled on the operator’s terms. We Fly reschedules you to another sunrise at no cost; Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán reschedules the flight but does not refund extras such as transport or breakfast. Book a morning early in your trip. The guide to weather cancellations and refunds lists the policies we found.
Safety checks
Star ratings tell you how a morning went, not whether the paperwork is in order. The federal aviation agency, AFAC, requires an operating permit, licensed pilots and passenger insurance, and the authorities advise travelers to confirm the permit before boarding. On 29 March 2026, AFAC inspected 23 of the 46 balloons operating in the valley and suspended three establishments for irregularities it did not specify. The worst accident on record here was the fire on 1 April 2023 that killed two passengers. Our Teotihuacán balloon ride safety guide lists what to ask an operator before you pay.

Teotihuacán Balloon Ride FAQ
Short answers to the questions people ask before they book a balloon flight from Mexico City.
No. The balloon flights sold to Mexico City visitors take off in the Teotihuacán valley, mostly around San Martín de las Pirámides, roughly 45 to 50 km northeast of the city by road. Operators collect you from your hotel before dawn and drive you there in about 45 to 60 minutes. Our page on balloon rides from Mexico City compares the transfers.
Across the flights in our comparison table, on dates we checked in late October 2026, the flight alone cost about $137 to $148 per person and packages with transport from Mexico City and a cave breakfast about $211 to $236. A private basket for two was about $1,017 for the pair. The headline price on most listings is the flight-only option, so check which option you are booking. Every tier is on our prices page.
Usually between about 4:30 and 5:40 a.m., confirmed by the operator the day before. Check-in at the launch field is around 5:30 at operators such as We Fly. Public buses from Terminal Norte do not run early enough. See how to get to the balloon port.
Only if the wind allows it. Operators look for currents toward the archaeological zone, but none guarantees the route: on some mornings you pass over the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, on others you see them from one side of the valley. Read do balloons fly over the pyramids?
Usually not. INAH charges foreign visitors MX$210 in 2026 (about $11), and most balloon packages list it as excluded. The zone opens at 8:00, after most flights have landed. If you want a guide and the ticket arranged, look at a balloon and pyramids tour and check that its option lists admission.
Flights run all year. The dry season from November to April is the steadier choice, with historical averages of about 31 mm of rain a month or less, though winter cold fronts can bring wind that grounds every balloon. Dawns are cold, around 2 to 4 °C on average from December to March. See the best time for a balloon ride.
The pilot decides each morning, and balloons fly only in light winds. Operators handle weather cancellations on their own terms: We Fly reschedules to another sunrise at no cost, while Globos Aerostáticos Teotihuacán reschedules the flight but does not refund extras. Viator's standard policy separately lets you cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before the start. Details in weather cancellations and refunds.
Yes, and they vary by operator. We Fly sets a minimum age of 4 on its Viator listing; Viaja Teotihuacan and Skyteam charge MX$35 per kilo above 100 kg. The listings we checked turn away or advise against pregnant passengers and people with heart or spine problems. Our guide to weight limits and restrictions compares the rules.
Ask for the operator's AFAC permit, the pilot's license and proof of passenger insurance; the authorities advise travelers to confirm the permit before boarding. In March 2026 AFAC inspected balloons in the valley and suspended three establishments. Our balloon safety guide lists what to ask.
